What is Type 2 Diabetes  ?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body fails to utilize the ingested glucose properly. This could be due to lack of the hormone insulin or because the insulin that is available is not working effectively. Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes which covers almost 90% of the total cases around the world. Obesity is thought to be the primary cause of type 2 diabetes. It is also known in other names like adult-onset diabetes or Diabetes mellitus type 2. It is basically a metabolic disorder caused by high blood glucose and relatively low insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is basically a metabolic disorder which is caused by a combination of lifestyle and genetic factors. Diet and obesity,  increasing age, lack of sleep,  Consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks in excess, lack of exercise etc can initiate this common disease.

The most common symptoms of diabetes are 
  • frequent urination, 
  • increased thirst, 
  • increased hunger and 
  • weight loss


Other common symptoms are 
  • blurred vision, 
  • itchiness, 
  • recurrent vaginal infections and 
  • fatigue.

Type 2 diabetes can be considered as a chronic disease which can reduce the  life expectancy up to 10 years. This is partly due to a number of complications with which it is associated, including: 
  • more risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke; 
  • chance of nontraumatic blindness and kidney failure
  • increased risk of cognitive dysfunction and dementia
  • sexual dysfunction
  • a 20-fold increase in lower limb amputations, and 
  • increased rates of hospitalizations and infections.
Type 2 Diabetes Treatment


The complications with type 2 diabetes can be reduced by adhering to medical treatment and keeping diabetes under control. Blood sugar should be regularly monitored so that any problems can be detected and treated early.

Treatment involves both healthy diet and exercise as well as oral medications to regulate blood sugar. One or more injections of insulin a day may be needed if things are getting worse.
