Content of Glucophage Tablet
Glucophage tablet contains Metformin Hydrocloride.Metformin HCL  is an oral antidiabetic drug coming under the class of biguanide. Metformin is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. metformin does not produce hypoglycemia in either patients with type 2 diabetes or normal subjects , and does not cause hyperinsulinemia.

Usage of Glucophage tablet

 Used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, specially in overweight and obese people and those with normal kidney function. It is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. Metformin is useful in the case of insulin resistance. It helps reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels there by reducing cardiovascular problems.
 
Side Effects of Glucophage Tablets
Common side effects are,
  • headache
  •  muscle pain 
  • weakness 
  • mild nausea 
  • vomiting 
  •  diarrhea
  • stomach pain
call your doctor immediately if your experiencing an of the following symptoms,
  •     feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion .
  •  swelling or rapid weight gain .
  •  fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms.
Glycophage can cause  lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the body, which can be fatal). Lactic acidosis can start slowly and get worse over time. Get emergency medical help if you have even mild symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as:
  •     muscle pain or weakness
  •     numb or cold feeling in your arms and legs
  •     trouble breathing
  •     feeling dizzy, light-headed, tired, or very weak
  •     stomach pain, nausea with vomiting
  •     slow or uneven heart rate

Dosage of Glucophage tablet

Glucophage tablets available in three doses such as 500 mg ,850mg and 1000mg.
The initial starting dose of GLUCOPHAGE (metformin hydrochloride) Tablets is 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, given with meals..The maximum recommended daily dose of GLUCOPHAGE is 2550 mg in adults and 2000 mg in pediatric patients (10-16 years of age).

Glucophage falls under the category of B of US FDA. Animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy.
