Cephalexin Dosage and Side Effects

Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and bone, ear, skin, and urinary tract infections. Cephalexin is mainly used to avoid bacterial infections. Its an effective medicine for inflammation of the middle ear, infection in pharynx including the tonsils and larynx, bone and joint infections, pneumonia, inflammation of connective tissue with severe inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin etc.


Side Effects of Cephalexin

Cephalexin is not advised for patients with penicillin allergy. Normally allergy to Cephalexin is very nominal.  Allergies occur in less than 0.1% of patients. Common adverse effects of Cephalexin include 
  • gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and 
  • abdominal pain. 


Others may include 
  • dizziness, 
  • agitation, 
  • headache, 
  • joint pain, and 
  • tiredness. 

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling, trouble breathing, rash, itching or red, blistered, swollen or peeling skin. Please stop taking the medicine of you are having any of the above symptoms and consult the doctor at the earliest.

Cephalexin is not advised for

Cephalexin is not advised for patients suffering from
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • a stomach or intestinal disorders
  • diabetes


Adult Dosage of Cephalexin

500mg/750mg every 8 hours. Number of days varies according to the infection.

Pediatric Dosage of Cephalexin

Syrup/Suspension are available. 125mg/250mg every 8 hours.  Number of days varies according to the infection. 

Dietary instructions for Cephalexin

Cephalexin can cause upset stomach. So better take Take cephalexin with food or milk.

Cephalexin at the time of pregnancy

Cephalexin falls under Category B of US FDA. Animal reproduction studies of Cephalexin have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
